Clipping Facts and Myths

You should always clip in winter: MYTH

Not every horse needs clipping. Leisure horses, ponies and those living out 24/7 usually manages perfectly with their natural coat

Clipping can prevent skin problems: FACT

A thick coat traps sweat or dirt and moisture against the skin. This creates the perfect environment for irritation like sweat rash, rain scald, or fungal infections.

The timing of the first clip: FACT

The first clip of the season is key. Horses start growing their winter coat as daylight shortens. If you clip too early the coat may grow back quickly and you may need 3-4 clips before spring. If you wait until autumn you may get away with 1-2 clips.

Clipping damages the coat: MYTH

Clipping doesn’t damage hair growth. The coat will keep growing back according to daylight hours and the horses natural rhythm. What can cause problems is dull blades, poor technique and a lack of aftercare.

The Best Horse Blanket Brands

Kentucky Horsewear is too expensive. This a phrase we regularly hear but in all honesty quality is expensive. Most buyers are happy to pay R2000 for a horse blanket every 2 years which equates too R6000 over a 6 year period. With Kentucky you will pay R4000 and your blanket will last more than 6 years. The rationale is hard to understand as a first time buyer but once you buy your first Kentucky rain sheet or stable rug you start to understand the benefit of quality.
